JOHN ALEXANDER, born in Kentucky, May 30, 1812. Practiced law in Illinois, serving the State in the legislature, 1836-40 and 1842. Elected to Congress 1843-51, and in 1859. Resigned to raise a Union brigade 1861. Commanded the right of Grant's lines at Fort Donelson, and led a division at Shiloh, Champion Hills, at Vicksburg, and in other actions. Afterwards commanded the 13th corps, till relieved in July, 1863. Resigned from army, November, 1864.
