ORMSBY McKNIGHT, born in Kentucky July 28, 1809. Graduated at West Point 1829. Professor of mathematics at West Point until 1832. Resigned from army and became professor of mathematics in Cincinnati College 1836-58. Took charge of Dudley University, Albany, N.Y., in 1859. Entered Union army in 1861 as brigadier of volunteers and served in the armies of Tennessee, Ohio, and northern Alabama. Promoted to major-general of volunteers April 11, 1862, and commanded in Department of the South. Died in South Carolina of yellow fever October 30, 1862.
