JOHN McCAULEY, born in Scott county, Ky., September 13, 1817. Moved to Illinois and admitted to bar 1840. Served in State Senate. Appointed colonel of Illinois volunteer regiment 1861. Served at Island No. 10, Stone River, and Chickamauga, and promoted to major-general of volunteers. Led the 14th Army Corps in Sherman's campaign from Chattanooga to Atlanta May to September, 1864. Governor of Illinois 1870-73. Elected to U.S. Senate 1891.
