LOVELL H., born in Kentucky August 4, 1818. Admitted to bar 1841. Served in Indiana Legislature. Served through the Mexican war. Served two terms in Indiana State Senate. Moved to Kentucky in 1849. Made colonel of a regiment in Union army 1861. Promoted to brigadier-general October, 1861. Took part at Shiloh and Corinth, and promoted to major-general. Commanded 5th corps of Army of the Cumberland, and participated in Grant's and Sherman's campaigns. Commanded in Southern military districts till 1865. Elected to Congress from Kentucky. Made brigadier in regular army. First Governor of Alaska. Assigned to Department of the Gulf. Died in New Orleans January 7, 1869.
