THOMAS FRANCIS, born in Waterford, Ireland, August 3, 1823. A leader of the "Young Ireland" party 1846-48. Found guilty of treason and banished to Van Dieman's Land, whence he escaped to the United States. Joined a New York regiment and fought at Bull Run. In 1861 organized the "Irish Brigade" of New York City. Fought at second Bull Run, Fredericksburg, Antietam, and Chancellorsville. In 1865, appointed Secretary of Territory of Montana, and while acting as Governor pro tem, was drowned in the Missouri River July 1, 1867.
