NATHANIEL PRENTISS, born in Waltham, Mass., January 30, 1816. Studied law. Speaker of State Assembly, 1851-52. In Congress, 1853, as coalition Democrat. Speaker of House of Representatives. Governor of Massachusetts, 1857-59. President of Illinois Central Railroad, 1860. In 1861 commissioned brigadier-general of volunteers, and assigned to 5th corps. Fought battle of Winchester, March 23, 1862. Forced to retreat across Potomac, May 26, 1862. Fought in battle of Cedar Mountain, August 5, 1862. Placed in command of Washington defenses. Headed the expedition to New Orleans, and succeeded Butler. Captured Port Hudson, July 9, 1863. Operated extensively on Red River. Resigned his commission in May, 1864. Elected to Congress for many terms. Served as U.S. Marshal for Massachusetts. Last election to Congress in 1888.
