JOSEPH, born in Hadley, Mass., November 13, 1814. Graduated at West Point 1837. Served in Seminole war, and made first lieutenant November, 1838. July 1, 1842, appointed adjutant of Military Academy. Served through Mexican war and promoted to captaincy. Brevetted lieutenant-colonel at Chapultepec. Assistant adjutant-general of Pacific division till 1851. Resigned and entered civil life February 21, 1853. Appointed brigadier-general of volunteers in Union army May 17, 1861. Employed on the defenses of Washington, and in April, 1862, assigned to a division command. Engaged at siege of Yorktown, and after its surrneder made major-general of volunteers. Fought at battles of Williamsburg, Fair Oaks, Frazier's Farm, Glendale, and Malvern. Made division commander under Pope, and corps commander under McClellan. Fought at South Mountain and Antietam. Made brigadier in regular army. Commanded Burnside's center at battle of Fredericksburg. Succeeded Burnside in command of Army of Potomac. Meade succeeded him, when he was assigned to command of 12th corps at Chattanooga September 24, 1863. Served under Rosecarns, and afterwards under Grant, at capture of Lookout Mountain and in the battle of Missionary Ridge. Later served under Sherman in the Atlanta campaign. Brevetted major-general in regular army March 13, 1865, and subsequently had charge of Department of the East, and of the Lakes. Placed on retired list with rank of major-general October 15, 1868. Died October 31, 1879.
