ERASMUS DARWIN, bornin Massachusetts, May 29, 1810. Graduated at West Point 1832. Served on frontier, in garrison duty, and as instructor at West Point. Made major-general 1858. Served with distinction in Union army, throughtout the Civil war, and was brevetted brigadier-general in regular army, but resigned 1864, to enter business in California.
