Entered U.S. navy, 1815. Acting lieutenant on a cruise to India. Made lieutenant January 13, 1825. In 1826 commanded frigate "Baltimore" on way to Brazil. Attached to "Peacock" on the Pacific. On September 8, 1841, promoted to master commandant, and had command succussively of "Mississippi" and "Vincennes". In command of "Germantown" in which he took part in the Mexican war. In 1852 commanded the "Susquehannah" in Commodore Perry's Japan expedition. Entered Confederate servce September, 1861, with rank of captain. Commanded iron-clad "Merrimac" when she sunk the "Cumberland" and blew up the "Congress". Promoted to admiral and thanked by the Confederate Congress. Blew up his ship at Hampton to save her from capture. In charge at Mobile, where he constructed the ram "Tennessee" and commanded her during the Union attack, August 5, 1864. Died in Talbot county, Md., May 11, 1874.
