He was graduated from West Point with the class of 1837. In the Mexican War he was on the staff of General Patterson, acted as aide to General Pierce, afterward President of the United States; distinguished himself in the battles preceeding the capture of Mexico, and rose to the rank of major by brevet. At the outbreak of the war he was in command at Key West, Florida. He was then transferred to the Army of the Potomac. He took part in the Peninsular and Rappahannock campaigns, and was at the battles of Fair Oaks, Gaines' Mill, Peach Orchard, Savage's Station, Malvern Hill, Antietam, Fredericksburg, and Chancellorsville, in all of which he showed himself a gallant fighter. In 1862 he was made major-general of volunteers, and was given command of the Third Army Corps. In March in 1863 he was ordered to report at Philadelphia, and about the close of the war was mustered out of the volunteer service. With the end of hostilities he was transferred to the Pacific Coast, And in 1875 was assigned to the Second Artillery, stationed at Fort McHenry, Maryland.
