With the beginning of our civil conflict he resigned his place as president of the Lime Rock Bank, raised three companies of volunteers, and was made colonel of the Fourth Maine Regiment. In March of 1862 he was commissioned a brigadier-general, and in the following November a major-general. At the battle of Chancellorsville he led his division in a bayonet charge and was shot dead.
