JOHN S., born in Missouri March 14, 1833. Graduated at West Point in 1857. Served in Utah and New Mexico. Entered Confederate service as colonel of 3d Infantry. Wounded at Shiloh. Operated in Arkansas and Mississippi against General Banks. Promoted to major-general. Captured in Missouri and prisoner of war till August, 1865. In 1873 became secretary of Missouri State Board of Agriculture. Appointed Railraod Commissioner 1875. Elected Governor of Missouri 1884. Died December 28, 1887.
