LEONIDAS, born in Raleigh, N.C., April 10, 1806. Graduated at West Point 1827. Entered the ministry. Accepted major-generalship in Confederate army, and erected the extensive defensive at New Madrid, Fort Pillow, Columbus, Ky., Island No. 10, Memphis, and other points. Commanded 1st corps under Johnston, at Shiloh and around Corinth. Commanded army of Mississippi at Perryville. Promoted to rank of lieutenant-general. Relieved of command after Chickamauga. Restored to command and served under Johnston during Atlanta campaign. Killed at Pine Mountain.
