BENJAMIN FRANKLIN, born in Deerfield, N.H., November 5, 1818. Admitted to bar, 1840. Elected to Massachusetts Legislature as a Democrat, 1853, and to Senate, 1859. Practiced law in Lowell. Delegate to Democratic National Convention at charleston, S.C., 1860. At beginning of Civil war, appointed brigadier-general of State militia. Occupied Annapolis, April 17, 1861, and Baltimore, May 13. Made major-general of volunteers, May 16, 1861, and placed in command of Eastern Virginia, with headquarters at Fortress Monroe. Captured Forts Clark and Hatteras, in August, 1861. Led expedition to Gulf of Mexico, March, 1862. Commanded in New Orleans, May to December, 1862. Recalled, December 16, 1862. In 1863 placed in command of Army of the James, operating in Virginia and North Carolina. Operated against Petersburg, but checked by Beauregard. In October, 1864, checked anti-draft riots in New York. In command at Fort Fisher. Removed from command by General Grant, and went to Massachusetts. Served in Congress, 1866-1879, except 1875-76. Defeated for Governor of Massachusetts, 1871, 1878, 1879, 1883. Elected Governor, 1882, by the Democrats. Ran for President in 1884, but got few votes. Died suddenly in Washington, 1893.
