HUGH JUDSON, born near Dockertown, N.J., January 14, 1836. Graduated at West Point 1861. Appointed captain of volunteers May 9, 1861. Promoted to first lieutenant in regular army May 14, 1861. Wounded in battle of Big Bethel August, 1861. Made lieutenant-colonel of a cavalry regiment. In January, 1862, went to Kansas as chief of artillery under General Lane. Rejoined his regiment in Virginia, fought several cavalry battles, and participated in second Bull Run. Promoted to brigadier of volunteers, and fought at Gettysburg. Brevetted lieutenant-colonel in regular army. Led many famous raids toward Richmond. Participated in Sherman's campaign from Chattanooga to Atlanta, and wounded at Resaca. Brevetted colonel for bravery at Resaca. Promoted to captain of artillery in regular army November 30, 1864. Captured Fayetteville, N.C., and brevetted major-general of volunteers. Resigned his commission in 1867. Minister to Chile 1865-68. Reappointed minister to Chile, 1881. Died in Valparasio December 4, 1881.
