WILLIAM WOODS, born in Cameron, N. Y., November 5, 1832. Graduated at West Point, June, 1855. Assigned to cavalry service, and served until 1857, at Carlisle, Pa. Sent to the frontier, and wounded in battle with the Indians. On sick leave till 1861. Renewed service as first lieutenant of mounted riflemen, and took part in battle of Bull Run. Appointed colonel of 3d Pennsylvania Cavalry, August 23, 1861, and commanded defenses of Washington. Raided in Virginia, and fought battle of Kelley's Ford, March 18, 1863. Repulsed at While Sulphur Springs, August 26, 27, 1863. In active cavalry service, and was brevetted till he attained rank of major-general. Resigned May 18, 1865. Entered manufacturung business, and invented much improved machinery.
