GORDON, born in New York 1821. Graduated at West Point 1845. In 1861 attached to McClellan's staff. Became brigadier, and fought his cavalry at Corinth. Made major-general, and in 1862 commanded army of Kentucky. Distinguished himself at Chickamauga and given command of 4th army corps. Fought in battle of Missionary Ridge and commanded a division at Fort Gaines. In the campaign against Mobile. Promoted to brevet major-general. Assigned to District of New Mexico, where he died January 1, 1873.
