HENRY WAGER, born at Waterville, Oneida county, N.Y., January 15, 1815. Graduated at West Point 1839. Employed on fortifications of New York harbor, 1841-44. Sent to Europe, 1845. Author and lecturer, 1845-46. In California as military engineer, 1846-51. Inspector of lighthouses, 1852. Captain of engineers, 1853. Practiced law till 1861. Made major-general August, 1861, and given command of Western department. In July, 1861, made general-in-chief of United states armies, a position he held till 1864, when he was succeeded by Grant. In April, 1865, he held command of military division of the James, and in August of same year of military division of the Pacific, which he retained till 1869. Transferred to military division of the South, which he retained till his death, January 9, 1872.
