Graduated at West Point 1835. Made first lieutenant 1839. Served through Mexican war. Made captain 1847, and brevetted major 1849. Resigned 1859, and went to farming. Entered Union army in 1861, as brigadier, and served with McDowell in Shenandoah Valley, and with Army of Potomac at South Mountain and Antietam. Became provost marshal of Department of Virginia. Resigned June 12, 1865. After the war, held several important civil positions.
