HENRY W., born at Delphi, Onondaga county, N.Y., September 24, 1827. Graduated at West Point 1852. Served in artillery, and resigned 1856. Practiced law in Syracuse, and served one term in State Legislature. Reentered army with rank of colonel in 1861, and was wounded at Bull Run August, 1861, promoted to brigadier-general. Fought in Peninsula campaign and promoted to major-general. Took command of 12th army corps and fought at Chancellorsville, Fredericksburg, and Gettysburg. Conspicuous in southwest in 1864, succeeding Hooker in command of 20th corps. Led Sherman's left wing in his march to the sea and into the Carolinas. Located at Brooklyn and defeated for office of Secretary of New York. Elected to Congress 1868, 1870, and 1874.
