Distinguished himself at Gettysburg and in Shenandoah Valley. Promoted to brevet major-general. Engaged in lumber business. Elected Governor of Michigan, as a Republican, 1884. Commander-in-chief of Grand Army of the Republic, 1890. Secretary of War under President McKinley.
