   ALGER, GEN. RUSSELL ALEXANDER, born in Lafayette, Ohio, February 27,
   1836. Admitted to bar, 1859. Entered Union service as captain of 2d
   Michigan Cavalry, 1861. Distinguished himself at Gettysburg and in
   Shenandoah Valley. Promoted to brevet major-general. Engaged in lumber
   business. Elected Governor of Michigan, as a Republican, 1884.
   Commander-in-chief of Grand Army of the Republic, 1890. Secretary of
   War under President McKinley.
