GEORGE, born near Dayton, Ohio, September 8, 1828. Graduated at West Point in 1852. Served for several years in the frontier army. Entered the Civil war with rank of captain, and served throughout with distinction, being promoted to the rank of brevet major-general. Commanded the district of North Carolina after the war, and was transferred to Idaho, where he spent six years in frontier service. Transferred thence to Arizona, where he subdued the Pi-Utes and Apaches. In command of Department of Missouri until his death, March 21, 1890.
