JAMES ABRAM, born at Orange, Cutahoga county, Ohio, November 19, 1831. Educated at Hiram College, Portage county, and at Williams College, Mass. President of Hiram College, 1857. Studied law. Elected a State Senator, 1859. Entered the Union army as colonel in 1861. Made brigadier commander, and operated against General Marshall in eastern Kentucky. Fought at Middle Creek January 10, 1862. Promoted to brigadier January, 1862. Commanded 20th brigade at battle of Shiloh, and in operations before Corinth. In September, 1862, assigned to court-martial duty in Washington. In 1863, was made chief-of-staff to General Rosecrans. Fought in battle of Chickamauga. Made major-general September 19, 1863. Elected to Congress November, 1862, and November, 1863. Elected U.S. Senator January 13, 1880, and President November 2, 1880. Shot by Guiteau July 2, 1881. Died at Long Branch September 19, 1881, after eighty days of suffering.
