   GRANT, LIEUTENANT-GENERAL ULYSSES, was born April 27, 1822, at Mount
   Pleasant, Clermont county, Ohio. Entered West Point Military Academy
   as cadet July 1, 1839. Appointed brevet second-lieutenant in United
   States army July 1, 1843, and assigned to 4th regiment infantry,
   stationed at Natchitoches, La. Promoted to second lieutenant September
   30, 1845, and joined General Taylor's command at Corpus Christi.
   Participated in the battles of Palo Alto, Resaca de la Palma,
   Monterey, Vera Cruz, Cerro Gordo, Cherubusco, Molino del Rey,
   Chapultepec, and in the capture of the City of Mexico. Stationed at
   Sackett's Harbor till 1849. In command of Fort Humboldt, 1851-51.
   Resigned his commission July 31, 1854. Entered tanning business at
   Galena, Ill. Commissioned colonel of 21st Illinois Volunteers June 16,
   1861. Commissioned brigadier August 7, 1861, and took command of Union
   forces at Cairo. Participated in battle of Belmont November 7, 1861.
   Captured Fort Henry February 6, 1862, and Fort Donelson February 16,
   1862. Promoted to major-general and assigned to command of District of
   Tennessee. Fought the two days' battle of Shiloh, or Pittsburg
   Landing, April 6 and 7, 1862. Co-operated with Mississippi in attack
   on Vicksburg June, 1862. Passed down Mississippi and to rear of
   Vicksburg March and April, 1863. Captured Vicksburg July 4, 1863. Took
   command of new military division of Mississippi and its combined
   armies October 19, 1863, and went to Chattanooga. Fought the battle of
   Chattanooga, or Missionary Ridge, November 25, 1863. Promoted to be
   lieutenant-general March 1, 1864, and given command of all Union
   armies. Reorganized Army of Potomac under Meade, and took the field
   against Lee May 4, 1864. Fought the battle of the Wilderness May 5 and
   6, 1864. In battles at Spottsylvania May 7th to 11th. Fought battles
   of North Anna May 20th to 26th, and Cold Harbor June 3, 1864. Crossed
   the James and invested Petersburg. Siege of Petersburg June 20, 1864,
   till surrender of Lee at Appomattox April 9, 1865. Elected President
   of the United Stated November, 1868. Re-elected President November,
   1872. Made a tour of the world May 17, 1877, to december 16, 1879.
   Entered banking business in New York and failed. Attacked by incurable
   disease. Died at Mt. McGregor July 23, 1885. Buried in New York City
   August 8, 1885.
