BENJAMIN, born at North Bend, Ohio, August 20, 1833. Graduated at Miami University. Studied law and located at Indianapolis, Ind. Entered Civil war as 2d lieutenant of an Indiana regiment, and soon after promoted to colonel. Joined army of Buell, at Bowling Green, Ky. Later attached to Hooker's corps and served in operations from Chattanooga to Atlanta. Led his command in the actions of Cassville, New Hope Church, and Kenesaw Mountain. Transferred to Nashville, and served in that campaign with General Thomas. Mustered out of service June 8, 1865. Brevetted brigadier January 23, 1865. Ran for Governor of Indiana, 1876, and defeated. Chosen U.S. Senator, 1880. Elected to President on Republican ticket in 1888. Nominated in 1892, but defeated. Retired to practice of the law.
