JAMES BIRDSEYE, born in Sandusky, Ohio, November 14, 1828. Graduated at West Point 1853. Entered army as second lieutenantof engineers 1853. Promoted to captain 1861. Entered Union army, and appointed lieutenant-colonel, November 12, 1861. Promoted to major-general of volunteers, October 8, 1862. Attached to Grant's staff and served at Forts Henry and Donelson, and at Shiloh and Corinth. Promoted to command of a division at Bolivar, Tenn., and in 1862-63, co-operated with Grant's movements. Led a corps in battle of Fort Gibson. Routed part of Johnston's army at Raymond May 12, 1863. Aided Grant in the battle of Champion Hills, and in the siege of Vicksburg. Made brigadier-general in regular army August 1, 1863. In 1864, advanced to command of Army of the Tennessee, and conducted important operations around Huntsville, Ala. Commanded Sherman's left during the Atlanta campaign. Was killed before Atlanta July 22, 1864.
