GODFREY, born at Cincinnati 1834. Graduated at West Point 1855. Entered Civil war as lieutenant of engineers and accompanied Butler to New Orleans. Given command of a brigade under Banks, and present at capture of Opelousas, Alexandria, and Port Hudson. Promoted to lieutanent-colonel in regular army. Operated with Grant before Petersburg, and was first officer to enter Richmond. Made brigadier-general in 1865, and major-general in 1866. Died March 19, 1884.
