JOHN IRVIN, born at Bellefonte, Pa., July 19, 1826. Served in Mexican war and promoted to captain. Commissioned captain of United States Cavalry May, 1861. Commanded cavalry division in Army of Potomac April, 1863, to April, 1865, and was severly wounded. At close of war brevetted major-general of volunteers and brigadier-general in regular army. July, 1868, became colonel of 8th cavalry. Retired in 1879.
