WINFIELD SCOTT, born in Montgomery county, Pa., February 14, 1824. Graduated at West Point 1844. Served in Mexican war, and on frontier until 1861, with rank of captain. Appointed brigadier-general of volunteers, 1861. Served throughout of Army of Potomac. Made major-general for distinguished service on the Peninsula, at South Mountain, and Antietam. In command of 2d corps at Fredericksburg and Chancellorsville. Commanded Meade's left center at Gettysburg, where he was wounded. Received thanks of Congress and returned to his command 1864. Took part in Grant's Wilderness campaign, and distinguished himself in battles of Wilderness, Spottsylvania, North Anna, Cold Harbor, and throughout the operations before Petersburg. At the end of the war served in various departments, having been made major-general. Commanded Department of Gulf, 1867-68. Nominated for presidency by Democratic party, 1880, and defeated. Died at Governor's Island, N.Y., February 9, 1880.
