                                   HERRON
   p.580
   HERRON, GEN. FRANCIS JAY, born in Pittsburg, Pa., February 17, 1837.
   Moved to Iowa, and 1861, entered Union service at head of the
   Governor's Grays. Fought at Dug Springs, Ozark, and Wilson's Creek.
   Promoted to colonel of 9th Iowa, September, 1861, and fought through
   Arkansas and Missouri campaigns. Wounded and captured at Pea Ridge.
   Made brigadier, July 29, 1862. Commanded the army at Prairie Grove,
   Ark., and made major-general. Commanded left wing of forces investing
   Vicksburg, and afterwards the 13th corps in Texas, and northern
   division of Louisiana. In May, 1865, received formal surrender of all
   Confederate forces west of the Mississippi. Resigned commission
   August, 1865, and became U.S. Marshal in New Orleans, 1867-69, and
   Secretary of State, 1872-73. Resumed practice of law in New York City.
