JAMES S., born in Allegheny county, Pa., December 26, 1826. Enlisted, 1846, as private in 1st Pennsylvania Regiment. Served through the Mexican war. Became a horticulturist and farmer. In 1861 raised a brigade of three months volunteers and commissioned brigadier April, 1861. Served with Army of the Ohio, in Alabama and Tennessee campaigns, and defeated the Confederates at Lavergne October 7, 1862. Promoted to major-general for gallantry at Stone River November 20, 1862. Fought at Chickamauga September 19, 20, 1863. Settled at Pittsburg after the war. Elected to Congress 1869-75 and 1885-87. Moved to New York city.
