FRANZ, born in Baden November 18, 1824. Came to America 1852. Organized a regiment in Missouri in 1861, and opposed the Confederates. Made brigadier May, 1861. Won the battle of Pea Ridge. Transferred East and fought the battle of second Bull Run. In command of eleventh corps, under Pope, September 14, 1862. In March, 1864, placed in command of Department of West Virginia. Defeated by Breckinridge May 15, 1864. Resigned and became editor of Baltimore "Weeker". Made Collector of Port of New York 1867. Appointed pension agent 1886. An author of repute.
