DANIEL HARVEY, born in South Carolina July 12, 1821. Graduated at West Point 1842. Made first lieutanant 1847. Served through Mexican war, and made major. Professor in Washington College, Va. Made colonel of 1st North Carolina regiment at beginning of Civil war. Fought in battle of Big Betherl June 10, 1861, and made brigadier. Served under Johnston. Commanded a division in Seven Days' fight and promoted to major-general. Fought at South Mountain, Antietam, and Fredericksburg. In 1863 sent to command in the Carolinas. Made lieutenant-general and served with Bragg at Chickamauga. After the war published several works, and died September 25, 1889.
