WADE, born in Columbia, S.C., March 28, 1818. Graduated at University of South Carolina and studied law. Entered Confederate service and organized cavalry regiment. Made brigadier-general. Served through Peninsula campaign. Wounded at Gettysburg July, 1863. Made lieutenant-general in 1864. Commanded cavalry in Virginia. In 1865 commanded rear guard of Confederate army of South Carolina. Elected Governor of South Carolina in 1876 and 1878. Represented his State in the United States Senate until 1891.
