STEPHEN H., born in Charleston, S.C., November 29, 1815. Studied law, and moved to Illinois, 1845. Served in Stated Legislature 1859, 1861, 1867. Entered Union service as brigadier-general, and after Shiloh promoted to major-general. Led a corps under Sherman. Succeeded General Banks in Department of the Gulf. Minister of United States to United States of Colombia, 1869-72. Served in Congress 1873-77. Minister to Peru in 1881, where he died March 27, 1882.
