   p.580
   HURLBUT, GEN. STEPHEN H., born in Charleston, S.C., November 29, 1815.
   Studied law, and moved to Illinois, 1845. Served in Stated Legislature
   1859, 1861, 1867. Entered Union service as brigadier-general, and
   after Shiloh promoted to major-general. Led a corps under Sherman.
   Succeeded General Banks in Department of the Gulf. Minister of United
   States to United States of Colombia, 1869-72. Served in Congress
   1873-77. Minister to Peru in 1881, where he died March 27, 1882.
