NATHAN BEDFORD, born in Tennessee, July 13, 1821. Raised a Confederate cavalry regiment and was engaged at Fort Donelson, Shiloh, Murfreesboro, and Chickamauga. Made major-general and commanded attack on Fort Pillow April, 1864. Promoted to lieutenant-general. Defeated by Wilson at Gainesville April, 1865, and a month later surrendered. Noted for his dsh as a cavalry leader. Engaged in railroad business after the war. Died October 29, 1877.
