WILLIAM SELBY, born near Adysboro, Tenn., August 27, 1800. Served in Black Hawk war of 1833, in Seminole war, and in Mexican war, when he was brevetted brigadier-general for bravery at Cerro Gordo. In command of Department of Oregon, 1858. Later, in command of Department of the West. Made prisoner by Confederates at Harper's Ferry. Retired from service August 1, 1863. Brevetted major-general March, 1865. Died May 9, 1889, in Florida.
