BEN, born in Rutherford county, Tenn., November 11, 1811. Fought with General Houston in Texas, and participated at St. Jacinto. Elected to Texas legislature and made major-general of State militia. A distinguished member of the Texas rangers in the Mexican war. Resided in California 1849-52. Returned to Texas and made U.S. Marshal. Joined Confederate army and made brigadier-general May 14, 1861. Joined his forces to those of Price and defeated Generals Lyons and Sigel at Wilson's Creek. Led his division at Pea Ridge, where he was killed March 8, 1862.
