JOHN BUCHANAN, born in Virginia, 1807. Served in Virginia legislature 1847-49. Governor of the State, 1850-53. Secretary of War under President Buchanan, 1857-60, when he resigned and joined the Confederacy. Commissioned brigadier-general in Confederate army in 1861. Defeated at Fort Donelson, February 16, 1862, but escaped capture by turning over his command to Pillow, and fleeing. Relieved of his command shortly after.
