JOHN B., born in Winchester, Va., August 15, 1810. Graduated at West Point in 1830. Served through Mexican war, and brevetted lieutenant-colonel for gallant service at Chapultepee, where he was wounded. Entered Confederate service and won the battle of Big Bethel. Made brigadier-general. Held the Union forces in check at Yorktown, participated in the battle of Malvern Hills, and promoted to major-general. Given command of Department of Texas, October 1862, and captured Galveston January 1, 1863. Entered Maxmilian's army in Mexico. Returned to Texas and lived in retirement. Died February, 1871.
