WILLIAM, born in Southampton County, Va., December 1, 1826; died at Washington, D.C., October 8, 1895. Graduated at Virginia Military Institute in 1847, and until the beginning of the Civil War, engaged in engineering. He joined the Confederate army in 1861, took part in the capture of Norfolk Navy Yard in April of that year, raised and commanded the Sixth Virginia Regiment, was engaged in most of the battles of the peninsula campaign, those on the Rappahannock, and those around Petersburg. He was commissioned brigadier general in March, 1864, and major general in August of the same year. He subsequently led a division in Ambrose T. Hill's corps, and at Lee's surrender was at Bermuda Hundred.
