GEORGE EDWARD, born in Richmond, Va., January 25, 1825. Graduated from West Point 1846. Served through Mexican war. Promoted to captain March 3, 1855. Entered Confederate army as colonel. Promoted to brigadier February, 1862. Wounded in battle of Gaines" Mills. Promoted to major-general and commanded a division at Fredericksburg. Led the famous assault on Union lines at Gettysburg. Defeated Butler's forces at Petersburg May, 1864. His forces were surrounded and overwhelmed at Five Forks April 1, 1865. Resided at Richmond after the war.
