JAMES EWELL, born in Patrick county, Va., February 6, 1833. Graduated at West Point 1854. Fought on frontier for three years. Joined Confederates 1861, with rank of colonel. Fought under Jackson and Lees, and was the most effective cavalry leader of the South, being both bold and rapid. Won the rank of general. Wounded at Yellow Tavern, Hanover county, Va., and died from his wounds June 12, 1864.
