Became a past-midshipman 1847. Participated in bombardment of Vera Cruz. Promoted to master July 18, 1855 and to lieutenant in September. At breaking out of Civil war, ordered to North Atlantic Squadron. Present at capture of forts at Hatteras, Inlet, and along coast of North Carolina. In 1862-63 participated in operations of South Atlantic Squadron off South Carolina. In July, 1862, was made lieutenant-commander. Promoted commander July 25, 1866; to captain July 31, 1872; to rear-admiral October 1, 1884. Placed on retired list June 1, 1885.
