Son of Mrs Rebecca Hatchel; born Aug 8, 1896, Logan Co, OK; educated in Logan public schools; entered service Aug 28, 1918; trained Camp Pike, but was in camp only a short while when he contracted influenza, which developed into pneumonia and resulted in his death, Dec 23, 1918; He was the inventor of the Peanut Digger, which bears his name. 81,y NEW, John Elmer 1st Sgt Mustang Canadian Son of Mr & Mrs Frank New; born Jul 18, 1896, Canadian Co, OK; educated in Oklahoma City schools; enlisted in the US Army, 1915, to ansewr the call for volunteers for border duty; was the first from his community to respond. When the 36th Div was organized, he was transferred to this Divi, attached to Co F, 142nd Inf; trained Ft. Sill and Camp Pike; overseas Jul 1918; sent to the front to participate in the first great all-American Offensive-St Mihiel Drive, and then in Meuse-Argonne Ofensive, where he was killed by machine gun bullet as they were advancing over the terrain swept by machine gun fire near St Ettienne, Oct 9, 1918; For extraordinary heroism displayed under fire, he was awarded the Croix de Guerre.
