M. SMITH, Sulphur grocer, was held and robbed of his billfold, containing $2 and personal papers. Former Sulphur Resident Killed in California Word was received here of the death of WILLIAM E. STONE, 66, of McFarland, California, who was a resident of Murray County for nine years. Stone was killed when hit by a truck while he was crossing the Golden State Bridge. Stone was born in Scott County, Arkansas and moved from there to here. After residing here nine years, he moved to Imperial Valley, California in 1928 then moved to Kern County in 1933. Survivors include his wife, Mrs. MATTIE A. STONE, eight sons, five daughters, 13 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Services for Mrs. Jackson Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon for Mrs. JULIUS EDLEYS JACKSON, age 81, who died at her home 15 miles north of Sulphur Sunday. Mrs. Jackson was born March 4, 1858 near Bolivar, Tennessee. She married Z. J. JACKSON in 1875 in Hardeman County, Tennessee. Survivors include nine children, W. N. JACKSON and J. C. JACKSON both of El Paso, Texas; W. S. JACKSON, Mrs. J. R. GOODWIN and FLORENE JACKSON all of Stratford; Mrs. J. M. GARRARD of Nocona, Texas; S. H. JACKSON of Ajo, Arizona; Mrs. J. A. ROGERS of Ada; and Mrs. TIM DULSWORTH of Pauls Valley, 47 grandchildren, 50 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. Word was received here by Mrs. C. J. GILLESPIE of the serious illness of her sister, Mrs. MARY SOULES at Star, Texas. Mrs. Soules was taken to Scott and White Hospital at Temple, Texas. Mrs. WAYNE GLOVER and little daughter SIGRID, formerly of Ponca City, were guests of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. R. W. Services for Berwyn Man Funeral services were held Friday afternoon for JOHN WESLEY BLACKWELL, age 73, who died at his home southeast of Berwyn Friday morning. Blackwell was born August 21, 1866 in Georgia. His early life was spent in Georgia and Texas and came to Oklahoma in 1900 from Texas, living in Murray, Johnson and Carter counties since that time. Survivors include his wife, Mrs. CALLIE BLACKWELL; two daughters Mrs. LUCY WALKER of Gladewater, Texas and Mrs. BESSIE DOYLE of Berwyn; five brothers, H. BLACKWELL of Route 3 Sulphur, A. J. BLACKWELL of Mannsville, W. G. BLACKWELL of Tatums, TOM BLACKWELL of Tulsa, and LEE BLACKWELL in Texas; and two sisters, Mrs. ALITHA NEWMAN of Hood River, Oregon and Mrs. LIZA LYMAN of Chelsea. A.JONES of Sulphur Springs, Texas is visiting her sister and family, Mr. and Mrs. JOHN EWING. FRANK SHAW, who has been in the CCC camp in Arizona for two years, came in Sunday and expects to stay here. JOHNNIE GATLIN, student at East Central at Ada, came home for the weekend. JESSE LEE took a truck load of cattle to Oklahoma City. WARDEN and DERWARD BYERS attended the late show at Sulphur. Mr. and Mrs. BEN SMITH near Roff attended church here. Rev. Scullin Mrs. MIRERS(?) of Roff, who was the former Mrs. H. W. DAVIS, died at her home in Roff last Thursday and was buried in Scullin cemetery. Mr. and Mrs. BEN TROUT spent Sunday here. COLBERT Funeral services for Mrs. NETTIE COLBERT, age 73, of Sulphur were held Wednesday afternoon. Mrs. Colbert was a pioneer resident of Murray County and Sulphur. She died Monday afternoon at the Rose Clinic. Mrs. Colbert was born October 6, 1866 in Fayetteville, Arkansas and lived at Sunset, Texas in her early years. She came to Murray County in 1894, 45 years ago and lived in the county since that time. She was a member of the St. Paul Methodist Church since its organization. Survivors include her husband, DIXIE H. COLBERT of Sulphur; two daughters Mrs. L. O. RICHARDSON of Oklahoma City and Mrs. MAYMIE KEETON of Sulphur; two sons, HOLMES H. COLBERT and E. R. COLBERT both of Sulphur; four grandchildren and a half-brother, W. N. CANNON, of Sulphur. Services were held Wednesday afternoon at the St. Paul Methodist Church. Rev. Interment at the Oak Lawn cemetery was arranged by A. G. Dunn funeral home. Thursday, October 19, 1939 Services for Father of Mrs. D. K. REED Funeral services were held Monday afternoon for E. R. ROBERTS, age 74, who died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. D. K. REED, Sunday morning. Roberts was born March 28, 1865 at Paris, Texas. He lived in Sulphur since 1922, at one time operating a grocery store on West 12 St. He was a member of the Church of Christ. Survivors include his daughter Mrs. Reed and two grandchildren RUTH JEAN REED and MARY ELLEN REED all of Sulphur and a sister-in-law, Mrs. N. J. POUNDS of Mills, New Mexico. Funeral services were held at the Dunn chapel Monday afternoon with JACK CHAFFIN of the Church of Christ officiating. Interment was in Oaklawn cemetery. Former Sulphur Resident Dies in Oklahoma City Mrs. MONROE LEONARD of Wilson, formerly of Sulphur, died Wednesday morning in an Oklahoma City hospital after an illness of five months. Mrs. Leonard had two major operations since June. She is a former resident of Sulphur and Murray County, well known here, moving to Wilson about five years ago. Survivors include her husband MONROE LEONARD and three children, DOLLY JO, MARY LOUISE and ANNA MARIE, all of Wilson. Her mother, Mrs. SCHAFF, and other members of her family live in the Iona community. Funeral services were held this afternoon and interment was in the cemetery at Wilson. Charges Filed Charges were filed against M. L. WOOSLEY of Oklahoma City, driving while intoxicated. Reunion A reunion of the PAYNE family at County Line was held Sunday, October 15, in the home of Mr. and Mrs. EUGENE SIMPKINS. PARRISH, age 70, who died at his home at Dougherty Thursday. Parrish was born November 12, 1868 in Mississippi and spent his early life in Mississippi and Texas. He had lived in Dougherty about 40 years. Survivors include three sons, CLAUDE PARRISH, THEODORE PARRIS, and TROY PARRISH, all of Dougherty, and one daughter Mrs. L. L. ROSS of Dougherty. Services were held at the First Methodist church of Dougherty Friday afternoon with JACK CHAFFIN officiating. Interment at Drake cemetery was arranged by A. G. Dunn funeral home. Services for Hyden Funeral services were held at Davis Tuesday afternoon for JOHN L. HYDEN of Ada, who was employed in Sulphur at one time by the Oklahoma Gas and Electric Co. ..Hyden was killed late Sunday night at Coalgate when an auto on the running board of which he was riding collided with another auto driven by SIDNEY R. MAINES. Mrs. CARL HARWELL of Oklahoma City was injured in the accident. Hyden was riding in the auto driven by HARRY J. HENRY. He is survived by his mother, Mrs. MAC CRAWFORD of Pauls Valley; his wife and two children, a sister Mrs. GAYE RICHARDSON of Pauls Valley and two brothers, BILL HYDEN of Dallas and PETE HYDEN of Ada. Pioneer of Mill Creek Dies FELIX PENNER, age 81, pioneer rancher of the Mill Creek community, died this morning at his home, west of Mill Creek. Penner had lived in the community 55 years, coming from Texas. He is survived by his wife, two sons, CHARLIE PENNER, banker at Mill Creek, and CY PENNER, rancher, and several grandchildren. The funeral has tentatively been set for Friday afternoon at the Mill Creek school house, arranged by A. G. Dunn funeral home. Mr. and Mrs. E. L. KENNEDY of Sulphur announce the birth of a daughter this morning at the Sulphur clinic. Services for Chigley Resident Funeral services were held this afternoon for Mrs. EFFIE ELLEN SMITH, age 65, who died Wednesday in her home in the Chigley community. Mrs. Smith was born in Kentucky on July 18, 1884 and spent her early life there. She came to Oklahoma in 1920 and lived near Hobart until 2 years ago. She was a member of the Pentecostal Holiness church. Survivors include her husband, J. J. SMITH; three sons, GORDON SMITH, ROY SMITH and WAVIE SMITH all of Sulphur; two daughters Mrs. (?) of Lone Wolf and Mrs. GERTRUDE DONHAM of Shawnee and 8 grandchildren. Funeral for Indian Woman Funeral rites were held Wednesday for SALLIE SEALEY, age 51, full blood Mississippi Choctaw Indian of the Chigley community, who died Monday at the family home. Mrs. Sealey was born September 25, 1888 at Ada. Survivors include her husband THOMPSON SEALEY; a daughter NINA MAE SEALEY and three sons JESTER SEALEY, HOUSTON SEALEY and MELTON SEALEY all of the home address. Brother of Sam Burns Is Killed HERBERT BURNS, brother of SAM W. BURNS, former news editor of the Sulphur Times-Democrat and a graduate of Sulphur high school, was killed in an auto accident at Austin, Texas October 28. Services Funeral services were held this afternoon for DAVID HARRISON HANEY, age 47, who died at his home seven miles southwest of Davis at Friday afternoon. The death followed a long illness. He was a brother-in-law of Mrs. ROSA FOUTS of Sulphur. Haney was born August 26, 1892 in Cooke County, Texas and spent his early life in Pottawatomie County, Oklahoma, moving to Murray County about 7 years ago. Survivors include his wife, Mrs. ALVA HANEY; two daughters Mrs. GOLDIE JENNINGS of Prices Falls and LENNIE HANEY, age 15, of the home; and four sons, FRANK 20, CALVIN 18, EDDIE 13, and PAUL 9, all of the home; and two sisters Mrs. MAUD BENNETT of Trousdale and Mrs. BETTIE BENNETT of Norman. Billie Jo was born April 3, 1930 at Boise City and the family moved to Sulphur 7 years ago. Mill Creek Resident Dies HOWARD DURIN OXLEY, age 65, died of a sudden heart attack Friday morning at his home in Mill Creek. Oxley was born July 13, 1874 in Missouri and spent early life there, moving to Oklahoma in 1899. During the past 40 years he lived in Pontotoc and Murray counties. Funeral services were held at the Free Will Baptist church of which he was a member. Thursday, December 7, 1939 D. L. Lunsford Dies Suddenly D. L. LUNSFORD, 53 year old Sulphur grocer, died suddenly this morning in front of his store, 320 E. Tahlequah. Lunsford was born July 3, 1886 in Tennessee and left there at age of 16. In 1902 he came to Pontotoc County and lived at Roff and the Hart community until two years ago when he moved to Sulphur and took over his grocery store at its present location. Survivors include his wife; three sons, HOWARD LUNSFORD of Dallas, Texas; RAYMOND LUNSFORD of Los Angeles, California; DELBERT LUNSFORD Jr. of Fort Sill; and two daughters, Mrs. GOLDIE HALL of Dallas, Texas and VIRGINIA LUNSFORD of the home. The fourth one FRANCIS ANDERSON was back in jail after coming out second best in a tussle with OTIS SHIELDS, jailer. Thursday, December 14, 1939 Sentence C. L. EATON, Murray county farmer, was found guilty of first degree manslaughter in district court Wednesday and the jury recommended a term of four years in the penitentiary. The case against DOYLE PARROTT, charged with indirect contempt of court, was tried this morning. BOSE JOHNSON, charged with driving an auto while intoxicated, has his case continued. The similar case against LECK WHITE was also continued. The case against CROWDER FARRIS, charged with larceny of fowls, was stricken. Services for Lunsford Funeral services for D. L. LUNSFORD, 53 year old Sulphur grocer, who died suddenly Thursday morning, were held Friday afternoon at the family residence, 402 E. Tahlequah. Lunsford was born July 3, 1886 in Tennessee and came to Oklahoma in 1902 then to Sulphur two years ago. Survivors include his wife, two daughters and three sons. Services were conducted by Rev. ROBERT S. SCALES of the First Baptist church. Interment was at Lightning Ridge cemetery six miles north of Ross arranged by A. G. Dunn funeral home. Former Sulphur Resident Dies Mrs. MARTHA ELLEN HOLBOOK, age 78, died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. L. B. BOONE in Ada Saturday morning. Mrs. Holbrook was born August 5, 1861 in Benton County, Arkansas. She was well known in Sulphur, living here until seven years ago. Funeral services were held here Sunday afternoon at the First Baptist church with Rev. R. C. KING of the Trinity Baptist church at Ada officiating. Burial in Oaklawn cemetery was arranged by A. G. Dunn funeral home. Mr. and Mrs. LLOYD MCDONALD of Sulphur announce the birth of a 8 pound son born Tuesday in the Sulphur clinic. Veteran of Civil War Dies ZACHARIAH TAYLOR HILBISH, age 92, Civil War veteran, died Tuesday morning at his home, 201 W. 12th, Sulphur. Hilbish was born August 23, 1847 in Pennsylvania and moved from Pennsylvania to Kansas. He came to Kingfisher, Oklahoma when the territory was opened for settlement. Hilbish came to Sulphur last July after living in Enid the past five years. During the war Hilbish served with the Union Army. He was a member of the Christian Union church. He is survived (bad print) by a son (?name) at Hennessey; and two daughters Mrs. FRANK TAGGARD of Enid and Mrs. A. P. MOORE of Muskogee. Services were held at Hennessey. Preliminary arrangements were made by A. G. Dunn funeral home. Thursday, December 21, 1939 Marriage License: JACK J. LUTTS 18 and BLANCHE TRAMMEL both of Sulphur. Body Arrives The body of LLOYD CHAPMAN, age 30, former Mill Creek resident, arrived in Sulphur Friday from Phoenix, Arizona where he died Tuesday of last week. Chapman's wife is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. ALFRED OWENS of Sulphur. Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon. Rev. DWIGHT O. NORTHRIP of the Calvary Baptist church officiated. Pallbearers were employees of the Makins Sand and Gravel Co. headed by RALPH PRUITT, local manager. Chapman formerly worked for the company. Interment at Palmer cemetery was arranged by Dunn funeral home. Services for Former Resident Funeral services were held Monday afternoon for Mrs. SYLBE COOK, age 19, of Greggton, Texas, who died at her home December 16 after a short illness. Mrs. Cook was a niece of Mrs. DAISY HUSBAND, Mrs. TOM HOLDER, and B. B. HUSBAND, all of Sulphur. She was born at Shamrock, Texas March 21, 1920 and spent her early life in Sulphur. Survivors include her husband, EVERETT L. COOK and an infant daughter; her parents Mr. and Mrs. W. P. HUSBAND of Greggton, six brothers, one sister, one nephew, and several aunts and uncle. Services were held at the A. G. Dunn funeral home chapel with burial at Lowrance cemetery. Pallbearers were TOM HUSBAND, RYLE HUSBAND, FRANK HUSBAND, LEE SMITH and L. F. DRAKE. Court Three men pleaded guilty to drunken driving: B. J. ELKINS, M. E. MCKINNEY, WILLIAM LEWIS. OVALL DUNN, charged with drunken driving, failed to appear. JOHN WALLACE, LEE SLEDD, GRADY SOUTH and BILL GIBBONS, charged with drunken driving, was up for sentence today. Thursday, December 28, 1939 Sentence FRANCIS ANDERSON, who pleaded guilty to two charges, was to serve 3 years in the reformatory at Granite on each charge-Anderson was one of the group who broke into the Pitts station to steal 18 quarts of oil and also was one of the four who attempted to escape, the other three escaped while he struggled with the jailer. Farms Sold Mr. and Mrs. CHARLES ERENST CROW of Randlett purchased a 160 farm 11 miles south of Sulphur. Crow is a general farmer who has lived around RAndlett for several years. Mr. and Mrs. OLEN HERSHNELL TINNEY, of Route 2 Ryan, purchased 100 acre farm 10 miles south of Sulphur. Tinney is a cotton and dairy farmer had been operating as a tenant near Ryan. Golden Anniversary In the year of 1889 on December 24, a young man named GEORGE W. PEVETO wed a fair maiden named LORENA L. BACON in the community of Dexter, Texas. Soon after the wedding they moved to Indian Territory and located near what is now Bee, Oklahoma. Nine years later they moved to Sulphur, having been ill for several months and advised by a doctor that unless a change was made, Mr. Peveto would not live but a short time. After drinking the water several months, they decided to make Sulphur their permanent home. Now after 41 years here, they celebrated their golden anniversary. Their children entertained with a surprise party Sunday and some 80 pioneer settlers of Sulphur and other friends and relatives attended an informal open house Sunday. The hosts were J. LEE PEVETO, AUDIE MAE THORNTON, BURL A. PEVETO and E.
