Services were Feb. 14 at the First Baptist Church of Davis at 2:00 p.m. with the Revs. James Densman and Finis Steelman officiating. Burial was at Green Hill Cemetery. Chambless was born March 8, 1923, to Willie Beaulah (Allday) and Floyd Quinton Chambless. Following graduation from Woodland High School in 1940, he served in the Civilian Conservation Corps at Cold Springs, Wyo. In February 1941, he joined the U.S. Navy as a signalman. While stationed at Pearl Harbor on the USS Tangier Dec. 7, 1941, his ship was the first to fire on the attacking Japanese planes. He was awarded a presidential citation for his actions. In 1944, he was a crew member aboard the USS Samuel B. Roberts, which was involved in the largest sea battle in naval history, the Battle of Leyte Gulf in the Philippines. He received the Purple Heart for his wounds. While home on leave, he met Norma Jo Dickerson, and they were married on Dec. 30, 1944. After the war, he used his navy signalman skills to launch a new career with the Santa Fe Railroad until his retirement in 1985. He is survived by his wife, four children, Mike Chambless and wife, Sherry, of Seminole, Janie Wells and husband, Jim, of Pauls Valley, Judy Chadwick and husband, John, of Davis and Jana Mann and husband, Kieth, of Sulphur; two brothers, Floyd Chambless of Ardmore and Lynn Chambless of Davis; a sister, Syble Roring of Ardmore, 14 grandchildren and two great- grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; one daughter, Donna Chambless; one brother Bill Chambless; two sisters, Doris Smith and Myra Chambless. Pallbearers were Branden Wells, Jason Chambless, Aaron Schettler. Brenden Lewis, Buster Coppenbarger and Junior Coppenbarger. Honorary bearers were Burke Healey, Buddy Jones, Dale Noland, Bill Dulaney, Fred Dale, Frank Heaton and Charles Robertson.
