All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm ========================================================================== SYLVESTER HAWKINS Published on July 30, 1996 The Santa Rosa Press Democratt Sylvester Hawkins, who taught mathematics at Santa Rosa High School for 30 years before retiring in 1973, died Friday at a Pleasant Hill convalescent hospital of Alzheimer's disease. He was 84. Hawkins was a teacher for 38 years, including his first six years in Oklahoma before coming to California. He began teaching at Santa Rosa High in 1943. He was born in a log cabin in Oklahoma. His early youth was spent on the family dairy. He graduated from Davis High School in Davis, Okla., and earned a bachelor's degree in mathematics from East Central State College in Ada, Okla. While in college, he married Emma Hayley, an elementary school teacher. They were married 56 years. His wife died in 1990. Hawkins received a master's degree from the University of Oklahoma in 1940. Besides teaching, he and his sons built seven homes in Santa Rosa, according to his daughter, Martha "Marty" Hawkins-Barnikel of Pittsburg. He was a longtime member of the First United Methodist Church of Santa Rosa, where he was a Church lay leader and also chairman of the Administrative Board and of the Board of Trustees. He also was a member of the California Retired Teachers Association and the Sons in Retirement. In addition to his daughter, he is survived by his sons, Victor Hawkins of Elverta near Sacramento and Neal Hawkins of Fresno; brother, Lester Hawkins of Davis, Okla.; sisters, Thelma Lee Craig, who lives near Davis, Okla., and Johnnie Mae Beller and Margaret Thomas, both of Davis, Okla.; six grandchildren; and seven greatgrandchildren. Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. today at Santa Rosa Memorial Park.
