Howell Lawrence E. Howell, 86, of Sulphur died Dec. 2, 2005, in Ardmore. Services were at 2:00 p.m. Dec. 6 at the Assembly of God Church in Sulphur with Pastor Paul Foust officiating. Burial was at Oaklawn Cemetery in Sulphur. Howell was born Oct. 20, 1919, in Okmulgee, to Edgar and Mona (Presley) Howell. He married Helen Jeffries Oct. 18, 1941. Howell joined the Army and served during World War II, earning a Purple Heart. After his discharge, he worked for the government at Edwards Air Base in Lancaster, Calif. While there, he invented a machine to pack parachutes. In 1967, his job with the Platt National Park brought him and his family to Sulphur. He did the majority of the rock masonry in what is now Chickasaw National Recreational Area. He was a past member of the American Legion. He is survived by his wife of the home; two daughters, Jami Copeland of Roff and Sandra Bradfield of Arizona; three sisters, Thelma Ballard of Okmulgee, Ethel Lee of Jasper, Mo., and Virginia Holleymoon of Oklahoma City; five half-sisters, two half-brothers, two grandchildren, Cherokee Higgins and Cary West, and two great- grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, Joe Hoosier and Charles Howell, four sisters, Lillie Waters, Bernice Ragsdale, Louise Riley and Edna Hoosier, and two grandchildren, Bobby and Russell Copeland. Pallbearers were Robert Mink, Kevin Higgins, Nelson Wisdom, Adrian West, Scott Twist and Daniel DeMoss. Honorary pallbearers were Robert Price and Ed DeMoss.
