All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm ========================================================================== Duncan Banner 23 Jan 2003 Zetta Mae Armstrong Lowry Zetta Mae Armstrong Lowry, 91, formerly of Duncan, of Huntington, W.Va., since October 2000, died Wednesday, Jan. 22, 2003, in Huntington. Service will be at 2:30 p.m. Friday in St. Paul’s United Methodist with the Rev. Paul J. McDowell officiating. Burial will be in Duncan Cemetery under the direction of Don Grantham Funeral Home. Visitation will begin Friday morning at the funeral home. Zetta Mae was born Nov. 18, 1911, in Huey, to George B. and Oma Smith Armstrong. She married Jim Lowry on June 17, 1938, in Sulphur. He preceded her in death on Aug. 28, 1997. Mrs. Lowry was a 1929 graduate of Ada High School. She graduated in 1935 from East Central Teachers College with a degree in Home Economics and Elementary Education. In Duncan, she was an official worker, clerk and inspector for a Duncan voter precinct for 25 years. In the community she had received appreciation awards from a local scout pack and she contributed over the years to the Native American Education programs. Not having a birth certificate, her father had to swear she was born in order for her to receive a passport. At the age of 70, she applied for her driver’s license using the passport as identification. She was a life member of the Garden Club of the state of Oklahoma, serving as president of the south central district. She helped start the Dig and Hope Garden Club and was a member of the Forsythia unit of that club. She was a homemaker. Mrs. Lowry was a charter member of St. Paul’s United Methodist Church where she served on the board of trustees, the Mission Committee and as a lay leader for conferences. She taught Sunday School for many years and was a charter member of the United Methodist Women’s organization. In Huntington, she attended Westmoreland United Methodist Church. Survivors include a son, Jimmy Don Lowry of Conroe, Texas; a daughter, Glenda Lee Lowry of Huntington; a sister, Zelmarean Armstrong Bartlett of Orlando, Fla.; and two grandchildren, Greg Lowry of South Plainfield, Texas, and Kendra D. Lowry of New York City. She was also preceded in death by a brother, L.B. Armstrong, on Jan. 20, 2003, in Drumright. Bearers will be Bob Randolph, James Howard, Don Henricks, Bob Weber, Howard Andrews and Clay Cole.
